History of RBP 141 'Corcain'

Inaugural Meeting 25 th November 1933

Corcain Royal Black Preceptory No. 141 was constituted on November 25 th 1933.

Chairing the proceedings was Sir Knt Robert H. Bell, Worshipful District Master of Portadown Royal Black District Chapter No 5, assisted by Sir Knt. John Anderson the Portadown Black District Treasurer, Sir Knt Joshua Bell acted as Chaplain and the District Registrar Sir Knt,James Dermott read the authority from the ‘Imperial Grand Chapter to form the Preceptory'.

The Worshipful District Master then installed the following first officers of 141 -

Worshipful Master, Sir Knt Thomas J. Boyle; Deputy Master Sir Knt Robert Arnold; Registrar Sir Knt Samuel W Boyle; Treasurer Sir Knt David Wright; Chaplain Sir Knt Andrew Boyle; First Committee-man Sir Knt William Slater.

First Parade of RBP No 141

RBP No 141 attended the Portadown Royal Black District Church Parade to St Marks Parish Church in Portadown on Sunday the 10 th June 1934, it is reported that there was a good attendance from RBP 141.

First Parade to Scarva by RBP No. 141, 13 th July 1934

Led by Parkmount Flute Band and wearing their new regalia, 20 members of Corcrain RBP No 141 proceeded to Scarva for the annual demonstration, there together with members of the band they had tea and sandwiches in the field before returning home after a very successful day.

Purchase of Ceremonial Swords 13 th July 1934

Two Ceremonial Swords were purchased for use of the Preceptory at a cost of 12/-now (60p).

November 12 th 1934 Proposed New Banner

On the Proposal of Sir Knt John Wright (Junior), seconded by Sir Knt Hugh Laverty, it was decided that the Preceptory purchase a new banner from Wm Bridgett and Sons of Belfast. Sir Knt, Edward McCann proposed that the painting on front side of the banner be ‘Arise and Eat' and consequently a committee comprising of Sir Knt's Hugh Laverty, Simon Little, and Samuel Boyle suggested that the rear side should depict the ‘Return of the Dove' also that the banner should measure 7'6” by 6'6”with a black centre and red border. For painting this Banner Corcrain RBP 141 paid to Wm,Bridgett and Sons of Belfast the sum of £28-0-0.

Unfurling of first New Banner 1st July 1935

Corcrain Royal Black Preceptory No 141 unfurled and dedicated their first New Banner on the 1st July 1935.

The proceedings were chaired by Sir Knt, D. G. Shillington, M.P.; also on the platform were Sir Knt Robert Bell WDM Portadown Royal Black District Chapter No. 5. Sir Knt David Rock, M.B.E.,.D.D.M.; Sir Knt Shaw Cooke, District Registrar; Sir Knt G. A. Locke, PWC; and the Rev. F.Patterson, Senior Curate St Marks Parish Church Portadown, who dedicated the Banner.

The Banner was unfurled by Sister Mrs Callendar Bullick of Tavanagh House who was thanked by the W.M. Sir Knt, Thomas W, Boyle;  he also presented Mrs Bullick with a pair of Ceremonial Scissors.

After the dedication ceremony the National Anthem was sung, then the members of the Preceptory with their Guests, and led by ‘Corcrain Conservative' Flute Band paraded the New Banner via Charles St, Montague St and Craigwell Ave, back to the hall where a Social Evening was arranged.

Corcrain RBP 141 engaged ‘Corcrain Conservative Flute Band' to lead them on 13 th July 1936, at a cost of £5 for Band £1/15/0 for 35 train tickets.
